Hi King, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance is extremely important. But no more important than the goal. I believe you have to have a purpose so large that you are willing to put the work in consistently to try to be the best you can be. Like, you can’t stop thinking about it until you hit the goal. And when you do, you set a new one. That’s actually what king life is all about. Holding yourself to a higher standard. I try to vacation as much as I can in different places and experience many different things and I feel it’s important to blow off steam. I love going to Mexico. I love traveling and the experience. For a lot of people their work won’t allow them to take time off or have that sort of benefit so they have to find productive and healthy ways to balance their minds. So the goal’s got to be to find a way out of the rat race. For me, it’s all about coming closer to God, myself, and my purpose. This gives me the energy to continue forward.

Conversations with The Black Boy King
Hi, Black Boy King, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up all over the USA as my mother was a Civil Rights advocate and worked for the Democratic Party under various senators, congressmen and also helped run Jessie Jackson’s presidential campaign. Most of my experiences growing up was in Las Vegas, NV so that’s where I consider the starting ground. But we stayed in public housing and in the projects in many areas. Growing up in Las Vegas was tough, sometimes we were homeless and also stayed in hotels or out the car, but by the grace of God, we made it work. I lived on Tropicana Ave and hustled up and down dealing with everything from drug addicts, gamblers, hustlers, prostitution, I seen it all in Sin City, but I did what I had to do to survive.

Hi Black Boy King, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Dallas, TX by way of Las Vegas, NV. I lived in many places as a kid as the youngest of two to a single mom. We lived in crime riddle neighborhoods of Whitely and the Condon Gardens Projects, I spent most of my youth on Tropicana Ave in Las Vegas. My mom was a product of the civil rights movement and was an active member fighting for change, so we moved around a lot and met a lot of different type of people. Las Vegas is sin city so you see all kinds of things going down and it’s just normalized. I remember walking to school on Tropicana Ave and having to ride the bus because my family was poor.
